The Kita Ku journey began in 1996 with the opening of a retail boutique in Melbourne's vibrant Hawthorn district. Under the name 'Kita Abadi,' the store offered a unique range of plus-size garments. The overwhelming positive response confirmed a clear gap in the market for fashion that catered to the mature, yet youthful woman.

A notable absence of imaginative fabric colours, designs, and textures in plus-size clothing inspired the creation of Kita Ku, a local and international label, in 2002.
